about

Since emerging onto the scene in 2014, Moses Sumney has ridden a wave of word-of-mouth praise, hushed recordings, and dynamic live performances. It's an organic, patient ascent all too rare in today's musical climate. In a voice both mellifluous and haunting, Sumney makes future music that transmogrifies classic tropes, like moon-colony choir reinterpretations of old jazz gems. His vocals narrate a personal journey through universal loneliness atop otherworldly compositional backdrops.

Following the self-release of his debut cassette EP, Mid-City Island, and 2015's 7", Seeds/Pleas, Sumney has performed around the world alongside forebears like David Byrne, Karen O, Sufjan Stevens, Solange, James Blake and more. With his 2016 Lamentations EP, The California and Ghana-raised troubadour widened the spectrum of his heretofore "bedroom" music, incorporating songs that feature more elaborate production and evocative songwriting. Now his inspired ascent continues.

His proper debut album, Aromanticism is a concept album about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape. It seeks to interrogate the social constructions around romance. The debut will include the devastating, billowing synths of "Doomed,” which in a way serves as the album’s thesis statement, as well as new versions of standouts "Lonely World" and "Plastic.” It’s a deliberate, jaw-dropping statement that can leave you both enlightened and empty.

Track Name: Don't Bother Calling
I’m not a body, the body is but a shell
I disembody but suffering is sovereign,
Still
No grasp on reality
The world is a wonderland scene
I don’t know
What we are
But every cell in the corpus resembles stars
Signal into the sky
God sings to me in reply

Don’t bother calling,
I’ll call you

I’m not somebody; somebody would savor us
You need a solid, but I’m made of liquid,
Trust
In me, I am the son of the sea
And I’ll call you when I feel finally free
I don’t know what we are
But all I know is I can’t go
Away with you with half a heart

Don’t bother calling,
I’ll call you
Don’t bother asking for the truth
Don’t bother calling, I’ll call you
Don’t bother calling, I’ll call you
Track Name: Plastic
I know what it is to be broken and be bold
Tell you that my silver is gold
Though we're much too old for make believe
And I know what it's like to behold and not be held
Funny how a stomach unfed
Seems satisfied cuz it’s swell and swollen
And you caught me
Shooting cross the sky like a star
But nobody told me
To never let it get too far
See my silhouette, so you’re standing scared of me

Can I tell you a secret?

My wings are made of plastic
My wings are made up
And so am I
Track Name: Quarrel
He who asks for much
Has much to give
I don’t ask for much
Just enough to live
But in the light
Morning will reveal the spoils of night
Through the walls of Jericho
Lies a heart of stone

With you half the battle
Is proving that we’re at war
I would give my life just for the privilege to ignore

Don’t call it a Lovers’ Quarrel

To whom much is given
Much is required
Luxurious liver
You never inquire

It ain't right, you see
Who is your family?
If I dont have tools to fight
Calling this a quarrel isn’t right

Quoting this a quarrel
So immorally implies
We’re equal opponents
And we both antagonize

Don’t call it a Lovers’ Quarrel
Don’t call it a Lovers’ Quarrel

We cannot be lovers
Cuz I am the other
We cannot be lovers
Long as I’m the other
Track Name: Stoicism
So as a mild-mannered child
My mom would drop me
Off in our family’s
Second-hand Mitsubishi caravan
And I would glance back
Before my descent
To mutter “I love you.”

In turn she’d nod her head, and
Turn to the road ahead, and Sigh
“...Thank you.”
Thank you.
Track Name: Lonely World
Lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely world
Casts a shadow on the shallow love it hurls
To the feet of swine it need not cast its pearls
Lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely world

And the sound of the void
Flows through your body
Undestroyed
And the sound of your voice
Flows from your body
White as noise

And the void speaks to you
In ways nobody speaks to you
And that voice fills the air
Fog in the morning, going nowhere

Lonely, lonely, lonely face under a veil
After all the laughter emptiness prevails
Born into this world with no consent or choice
Lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely…
Track Name: Make Out in My Car
I’m not tryna
Go to bed with you
I just wanna make out in my Car
Track Name: The Cocoon-Eyed Baby
We scrawl
Unwritten law of the land
On scroll that’s rolled up
And rolled in

The cocoon-eyed baby’s
Swollen, clenched hand

The baby
Cries out in protest
A scream raw and grotesque
That soon

He learns
To suppress
Track Name: Doomed
Hollow one
With inverted tongue
From whence does fulfillment come?

When I expel
From this mortal shell
Will I die for living numb?

Am I vital
If my heart is idle
Am I doomed?

I feel you
But nobody else
Though you’re someone I can’t see
Yet you say nothing
Of the stoic suffering
That stirs lukewarm in me
If lovelessness is godlessness
Will you cast me to the wayside
Well I feel the peeling
Of half-painted ceilings
Reveal the covering of a blank sky

Am I vital
If my heart is idle
Am I doomed?
Cradle me
So I can see
If I’m doomed
Am I vital
If my heart is idle
Am I doomed?
Cradle me
So I can see
If I’m doomed
Track Name: Indulge Me
Indulge me
All my old lovers have found others
I was lost in the rapture
Dead sea as barren as a stutter
And colored laughter
I don’t trouble nobody
Nobody troubles my body after
All my old others have found lovers

Indulge me
Track Name: Self-Help Tape
Imagine being free
Imagine tasting free
Imagine feeling free
Imagine feeling
